The war zone is among the most perilous environments for anyone—and journalists are no exception. Palestine stands as one of the most dangerous places for journalists, having recorded the highest death toll of any country in recent years. Despite these immense risks, Palestinian journalists have emerged as crucial figures, using their voices to communicate with the world. They report on pivotal, life-threatening moments, ensuring that the international community is aware of the ongoing crisis. Journalists in Gaza face particularly grave risks, as they work to document the horror of Israeli airstrikes, widespread famine, the displacement of 90% of Gaza’s population, and the destruction of 80% of its buildings.
Israel’s media ban not only obstructs the work of international journalists but also places immense pressure on local reporters, further restricting the public’s right to freedom of expression. According to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), 13 women journalists have already lost their lives due to Israeli airstrikes, while others continue to work in constant danger, with inadequate security protections.
To honor the extraordinary resilience, bravery, and courage of journalists working in the most perilous conditions to document the realities of the Gaza crisis, Amnesty International recognized four Palestinian journalists on December 12, 2024. Among them were Bisan Ouda and Plestia Alaqad, who were both awarded the Human Rights Defender Award.
